Get to know IMSA

There are 2 types of categories taking part in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship : Prototype, which showcases cutting-edge racing technology, and GT, based on production models. These form the series' five classes: GTP, LMP2, LMP3, GTD PRO, and GTD.

To help fans track the race, the Leader Light System displays each car's position on an LED panel. The color of the number indicates the car's class—red for GTD PRO, for example—making it easy to spot a car’s ranking in its category.

GTP

The Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) made its first appearance on the track in 2023. All entries in this category feature a common hybrid system that recovers energy during braking, storing it in batteries for later use. Five leading global brands—Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Lamborghini, and Porsche—are participating in the class. Each automaker has created its own bespoke internal combustion engine and unique bodywork.

LMP2

The Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) is a closed-cockpit race car built by four certified manufacturers. Besides being eligible for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, LMP2 vehicles can also race in other international series.

GTD PRO

Introduced in 2022, the GTD PRO class features race cars built to FIA GT3 specifications, allowing factory teams and drivers to compete at the highest level.

GTD

The GT Daytona cars are enhanced (not defined by) technology and utilize the global FIA GT3 specification.
